Abstract: “The art of memory” is one of the most important features in Modiano's literary narratives. Under the perspective of the “déjà vu” narrative theory, Modiano's Occupation Trilogy—La Place de l' Étoile, Night Rounds and Ring Roads — can be seen as a typical demonstration of the art of memory within the multiple framework of three types of déjà vu: that of the paranoid, the dilemmatic, and the marginalized. In discussing these three types of déjà vu, this paper attempts to construct a new critical approach to the art of memory in the pattern of “déjà vu” presented in the Trilogy, and as a result to reveal how with this art Modiano evokes “the most ungraspable human destinies” and uncovers the theme of the existence of the Jewish people during the occupation as well as the existence of the whole human beings.

Key words: déjà vu, the art of memory, Modiano
