Abstract: There are many descriptions of transformations in the works of Michel Tournier.i.e. the protagonist is transformed into a living being in nature or a mythological figure. In the context of this writing, this kind of transformation is perceived as alienation, as the process of transformation is often accompanied with the change of subjective consciousness. Self-consciousness as a spatial coordinate reflects the relationship between self and the surrounding things. As a temporal coordinate, it indicates the difference between self and the transformed figures of mythology. In this sense, the transformed characters are in constant state of alienation both in physical sense and in transcendent sense. The essay concludes that the experience of alienation enables the characters to transcend the limit of human existence and understand the diversity of existence.

Key words: Michel Tournier, alienation, transcendent
